The former South African cricket coach, Russell Domingo has been appointed as Bangladesh head coach for the next two years.

Despite never playing any form of first-class cricket, Domingo”s image of a coach is highly praiseworthy. He was involved with the South Africa side that reached the semi-final of the T20 World Cup and Cricket World Cup in 2014 and 2015 respectively.

At a junior level, Domingo has coached the U-19 South Africa side. He also took up the coaching role of Warriors and reached immense heights with the team. He gained his first coaching qualification at the age of 22.

Russell Domingo will arrive in Bangladesh on 21st August. Alongside him, he has Neil McKenzie as the batting coach, Charl Langeveldt as the pace bowling coach and Daniel Vettori as the spin bowling coach. McKenzie and Langeveldt were part of the South Africa coaching staff that included Domingo.

Domingo was shortlisted for the role along with two other notable cricket coaches, Mike Hesson and Micky Arthur.

The BCB president Nazmul Hasan said, “He has a wealth of experience and we have been very impressed with his passion and coaching philosophy. He has a clear idea of what is required to take the team forward.”

BCB president also highlighted the fact that they needed someone who was a long term prospect.

“We have decided to pick Russell as he will be available. There were other candidates but we wanted someone who could be available for us and certainly he has got the experience. We want a coach who can have a long term plan and he fits that because he is not interested to take leave.”

Domingo expressed his contentment after the appointment and termed it as a “massive honour”.

Domingo stated that his prime focus would be developing the players keeping the future in mind.

“I look forward to continuing the ongoing development of current players whilst also looking towards the future and developing some new bright stars from within the talent pool of Bangladesh cricket.”

His first assignment as a coach will be the one-off test against Afghanistan which begins on September 5 in Chittagong.
