Virat Kohli danced to the melody of the ‘Ram Siya Ram’ song during the initial session of Day 1 in the second Test against South Africa at Newlands in Cape Town on Wednesday, January 3. In a circulating video on X (formerly Twitter), Kohli respectfully folded his hands and gestured an archery sign while fielding in the opening session, paying homage to Lord Rama.
This action draws inspiration from the Ramayana legend, where Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana with a bow and arrow symbolizes the triumph of good over evil in Hindu mythology. The ‘Ram Siya Ram’ song is typically played when South Africa’s player of Indian origin, Keshav Maharaj, comes out to bat.

Regarding Kohli, the right-handed batsman emerged as the highest run-scorer for India in the initial Test, notching scores of 76 and 38 in his two combined innings. However, his innings of 76 in the third inning couldn’t prevent India from a comprehensive defeat by an inning and 32 runs, resulting in a 1-0 deficit in the two-match Test series.
Kohli has accumulated 833 runs in eight Tests in South Africa, maintaining an average of 52.06. This includes two centuries and four half-centuries. The 35-year-old is aiming to sustain his excellent batting form against the Proteas in the upcoming innings for India.
Mohammed Siraj takes the spotlight as India dismisses South Africa for 55 in the first inning
A superb bowling display by Mohammed Siraj led to India dismissing South Africa for a mere 55 runs in 23.2 overs in their first innings. Siraj achieved a career-best figure of 6/15, with Jasprit Bumrah and Mukesh Kumar securing two wickets each.
South Africa’s wicketkeeper-batsman Kyle Verrynne contributed the highest with 15 runs, and David Bedingham (12) was the only other batsman to reach double figures.
After an impressive bowling performance, India aims to strengthen their position with the bat and secure a 1-1 draw in the series. In the first Test, India faced challenges, being dismissed for 245 and 131 runs.
