Indian cricketer R Sai Kishore has openly admitted how Shubman Gill’s exceptional batting forced him to rethink his bowling approach. Kishore, who has known Gill since the latter’s teenage days, recalled their very first encounter during an Under-19 match in Patiala. At just 16, Gill announced his arrival with a mammoth score of 260 runs against Kishore’s side.
That remarkable innings left a lasting impression, and it became evident that Gill was no ordinary youngster. Later, in the Ranji Trophy, Gill repeated his brilliance by smashing 270 runs, once again against Kishore’s bowling. These early encounters highlighted Gill’s extraordinary ability to dominate even seasoned bowlers at a young age.
Years of Struggle to Counter Gill
Kishore admitted that it wasn’t easy dealing with Gill’s mastery at the crease. In fact, it took him nearly four years to truly figure out a way to bowl to the right-hander. The spinner revealed that Gill’s stroke play and shot-making ability were so advanced that he often found himself out of answers. Kishore even turned to his coach, Ram Kumar, seeking solutions on how to counter the young prodigy who seemed to effortlessly dismantle his bowling spells.
According to Kishore, Gill’s consistency and adaptability made him one of the toughest opponents he has ever faced. What made the challenge unique was not just Gill’s talent, but his capacity to sustain that level of excellence across formats and stages of his career.
A Changed Trajectory and Mutual Respect
Faced with repeated setbacks against Gill, Kishore realized he needed to reinvent himself. He said that he had to alter his bowling trajectory and add new variations purely to match up to Gill’s rare talent. This period of trial and adaptation ultimately made Kishore a better cricketer, as it pushed him out of his comfort zone and compelled him to innovate.
Interestingly, Kishore has also shared this story directly with Gill, expressing how much the latter’s batting influenced his own evolution as a bowler. Referring to Gill as a “prodigy,” Kishore underlined the respect he holds for India’s young Test captain. What began as a phase of frustration eventually turned into a valuable lesson, demonstrating how Gill’s brilliance has shaped not only his own career but also that of fellow professionals around him.
