Pakistan T20I captain Salman Agha is facing potential repercussions for remarks made during a post-match press conference following the Asia Cup 2025 final. The controversy stems from a statement he made after India’s Suryakumar Yadav donated his entire match fee from the tournament to the Indian Army and the families affected by the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives.
In response to this gesture, Agha announced that the Pakistan team would be donating its match fees to civilians impacted by India’s “Operation Sindoor,” a series of precision strikes by Indian forces targeting terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The strikes were launched in retaliation to the Pahalgam attack. Agha stated, “We, as a team, the whole team, we are donating our match fees to our civilians and our children who were affected in the Indian attack that happened (Operation Sindoor). We are all donating this to them.”
BCCI Plans Official Complaint Over Political Undertones
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly preparing to file an official complaint against Agha over his remarks. According to a report by Jagran.com, board officials believe his comments are not only controversial but also political, as they touch upon a sensitive geopolitical issue and mention India directly.
The statement is seen as a breach of the players’ Code of Conduct, which discourages political commentary, and could even attract international scrutiny. The situation has escalated due to the involvement of a cross-border security matter, raising concerns that Agha’s remarks could strain cricketing ties between the two nations. The BCCI’s move to take formal action reflects its stance on keeping political narratives separate from the sport.
Further Remarks on Trophy Controversy Add to Tensions
The controversy did not end with Agha’s comments on Operation Sindoor. During the same press conference, he also defended the actions of Asian Cricket Council and Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who took away the Asia Cup trophy after India reportedly declined to receive it from him. Agha commented, “If you don’t accept the trophy from the ACC president, how will you get it?” This remark further fueled the tension following the final, where India emerged victorious.
Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav’s donation, “I have decided to donate my match fees from this tournament to support our Armed Forces and the families of the victims who suffered from the Pahalgam terror attack. You always remain in my thoughts. Jai Hind,” received widespread praise. With each Indian player earning ₹4 lakh per T20I match, Yadav’s donation totals ₹28 lakh for the seven matches played, highlighting the contrast in messaging between the two captains.
