On the occasion of his 40th birthday, MS Dhoni was wished by the cricket fraternity. Captain Cool, as he’s fondly known by Indian fans, is one the greatest captains and finishers to have ever graced the sport of cricket.
People all around the world respect MS Dhoni. Known for his calm demeanor on the field, Dhoni has led the Indian team and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to many trophies over the years. He is the only captain to win all three ICC events [not including the recently introduced WTC]. The 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy – he has won them all.
Impact on the future generation
Under Dhoni, plenty of cricketers have thrived. But there’s one thing that goes unsaid about Dhoni. It’s that he made sure the transition of Indian cricket post the retirement of legends went smoothly. He ensured that Team India will continue to compete at a high level after Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar’s retirement. Nurturing youngsters was one of the biggest qualities of ‘Thala’. Hence, he was successful in building a squad for the future.
Testimony to the above fact is the success of players like Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravi Ashwin and the biggest of them all, Virat Kohli. After taking over the captaincy post Dhoni’s retirement, Kohli had once stated that “MS Dhoni will always be my captain”. While this goes to show the impact of Dhoni, it also tells us how respected he is among the cricketers.
On August 15, 2019, Dhoni bid goodbye in a heartfelt message on his social media account. Although it was the independence day, his announcement changed the tone of the scene. Nevertheless, he left a long-lasting legacy behind him and his impact on Indian cricket will never be forgotten. On Dhoni’s birthday, plenty of wishes poured in.
