Scotland’s men’s cricket team has unveiled its 15-member squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, a major international tournament scheduled to begin on February 7, 2026, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
This announcement follows a surprising turn of events in which Scotland was called up to take part in the competition only after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) withdrew Bangladesh from the event due to unresolved concerns about playing matches in India.
As a result of that withdrawal, the International Cricket Council (ICC) selected Scotland — the next-highest ranked side that had not originally qualified — to fill the vacant spot in Group C. Scotland’s inclusion is notable given it has featured in six of the nine previous T20 World Cups, marking a continuation of its growing presence on the world stage.
Alongside the official squad, Scotland also named two travelling reserves and three non-travelling reserves, ensuring depth and readiness for any last-minute changes. The squad is captained by Richie Berrington, who will lead his side against group opponents including England, Italy, Nepal, and the West Indies, with Scotland’s first match slated for February 7 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata against the West Indies.
Balance and Opportunity in Selection
Cricket Scotland’s Head of Performance, Steve Snell, spoke enthusiastically about the team and the composition of the squad, stressing both its balance and potential for success in unfamiliar conditions.
“The coaching staff, selectors, and I are all really excited about the squad that has been picked,” Snell said. He emphasized that the selection was made with versatility in mind to tackle the challenges of sub-continental conditions that the tournament will present.
Snell highlighted two players in particular as exciting prospects. “There’s obviously a great opportunity for Zainullah Ihsan, and whenever he’s played at youth level or for the ‘A’ squad, he’s shown an exciting range of skills and bowled at genuine pace. We’re delighted for him…” he said, underscoring the faith the selectors have in youth talent.
He also remarked positively on Oli Davidson’s recent improvements, saying, “Oli Davidson has worked tirelessly on his skills and shown tremendous desire and work ethic… and he also thoroughly deserves his call-up.”
Goals and Group Prospects
Despite the abrupt nature of their World Cup entry, Scotland’s squad appears motivated and ready to compete at the highest level. Players have expressed eagerness to “take on the best in the world and grasp the opportunity that has been afforded to them.” With a balanced mix of experienced internationals and promising young talent, Scotland will hope to make an impact in a competitive group and perhaps secure memorable results in the 2026 T20 World Cup.
