Selection Panel Reveals Truth Behind Dhoni’s Resignation
MS Dhoni

Fresh revelations suggest that the decision for MS Dhoni to step down as India’s limited-overs captain in 2017 may not have been entirely his own. Former selector Jatin Paranjpe has shared details indicating that the move was initiated by the selection panel of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). According to Paranjpe, the committee felt it was the “right time to move on” and begin a transition in leadership.

At the time, Dhoni was 35 and had already achieved everything possible as captain, including leading India to multiple ICC trophies. The selectors reportedly believed that planning for the future was crucial, especially with a young leader ready to take charge. The panel approached Dhoni respectfully, communicating their perspective and discussing the direction they envisioned for Indian cricket.

Dhoni’s Response and Leadership Transition

Paranjpe recalled that both he and then-chief selector MSK Prasad spoke directly with Dhoni about the proposed change. Rather than resisting the idea, Dhoni handled the situation with composure and professionalism. He subsequently sent an email confirming his “willingness to step down,” demonstrating the calm and dignified manner that defined his leadership career.

The transition paved the way for Virat Kohli to assume the captaincy in white-ball formats. Kohli had already been leading the Test side and was seen as the natural successor. The selectors believed that giving him full control across formats would provide stability and clarity in team leadership moving forward.

Support for the New Era

Despite stepping aside, Dhoni reportedly assured the selection committee that he would extend his “full support” to Kohli and contribute positively to the team’s success. This gesture reflected his commitment to Indian cricket above personal position. Even after relinquishing captaincy, Dhoni continued to play a vital mentoring role within the squad.

The revelation sheds light on how carefully managed the leadership shift was behind the scenes. While the public narrative at the time suggested Dhoni voluntarily stepped down, these insights point toward a more strategic decision taken collectively. Ultimately, the transition marked the end of one of India’s most successful captaincy tenures and the beginning of a new chapter under Kohli’s leadership — a move shaped by planning, mutual respect, and a long-term vision for the team’s future.
