Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi is in the news again but this time its cricket related. He has signed up as the icon player for Galle Gladiators and will feature in the Lanka Premier League, slated to take place in November this year.
The LPL was supposed to begin in late August but was postponed since it was clashing with the Indian Premier League. As per sources, it is likely that Shahid Afridi will be the brand ambassador of the team alongside playing for them.
Shahid Afridi to play Lanka Premier League
The Galle Gladiators team is in partnership by the IPG group from Pakistan. They are also the owners of Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League, a team led by former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed. Incidentally, the Galle Gladiators was also the first team to get sold for the Lanka Premier League.
The Owner of the Gladiators franchise, Mr Nadeem Omar over the years been helping many Pakistani cricketers from the younger age groups. They have been receiving help with in the form of jobs, financial help, whereas some have been receiving help through other grassroots activities.
PSL Playoffs To Take Place Later This Year
Shahid Afridi was earlier tested positive 2 months back when the COVID-19 outbreak had accelerated the cases in Pakistan. During the lockdown in Pakistan, Afridi was helping the people in his locality. It was during that time when he contracted the novel coronavirus. But with Afridi now fully recovered will be looking to get back to some franchise cricket since he only plays in the PSL for Multan Sultans.
Apparently, Multan Sultans were also the table toppers this year but due to the COVID outbreak, the organisers had to cancel the playoffs. So with PCB now announcing the playoff dates for the already pending PSL, we will soon see Afridi even turn up for the Multan Sultans.
The remaining game of the tournament will take place in November soon after IPL ends.
