Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan sustained an ankle injury while playing football the night before their first warm-up match against Sri Lanka in Guwahati before the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup. He did not take the field in the warm-up game, instead, Mehidy Hasan Miraz led the Bangladesh team.

According to RevSportz, Shakib Al Hasan has a swollen ankle after getting injured while playing football. He has been ruled out of the warm-up matches. It is uncertain whether the all-rounder will be available for Bangladesh’s opening match of the 2023 ODI World Cup. They take on Afghanistan on Saturday, October 7 in Dharamsala.

Shakib Al Hasan will be playing his fifth consecutive ODI World Cup. He made his ODI World Cup debut in 2007 and has played in all editions since then. This is the second time he will be leading the team, having previously led in 2011. He has played 29 ODI World Cup matches, scoring 1146 runs at an average of 45.84, including two centuries. He has also taken 34 wickets at the world champions.

Shakib Al Hasan hints at retirement after the 2025 Champions Trophy

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan has hinted at retirement from the sport after the 2025 Champions Trophy. He expressed that he might quit Test cricket after the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup and T20Is after the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the United States of America.

“As far as international career is concerned, what I see at this moment is up to 2025 Champions Trophy in the ODI format. The T20 format is up to the 2024 World Cup and that’s it. As far as the Test goes, maybe sooner, maybe after the World Cup,” Shakib was quoted as saying in an exclusive interview with T-Sports.

“Maybe I will retire from three formats at the same time and no one can tell about the future but at this moment I have such an idea,” he added.
