Shami Set To Return For England ODIs, Akash Deep Out For A Month- Reports

Star Indian pacer Mohammed Shami is likely to be included in India’s squad for the ODI series against England next month. In contrast, fellow pacer Akash Deep will be unavailable for the home series due to injury.

As per Cricbuzz, the selection committee is expected to observe Shami in the knockout matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy in Baroda, where he will represent Bengal. After undergoing surgery on his right heel in 2024, Shami was expected to return for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, but knee swelling kept him out of the Test series.

If Mohammed Shami proves his fitness and impresses the selectors, he will be considered for the ODI series against England at home as well as the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan and UAE.

Meanwhile, Akash Deep will be unavailable for the T20I series against England. Although he has never played a T20I for India, he might have been considered for selection as first-choice pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj are expected to be rested.

Deep missed the fifth Test of the recent BGT series due to back pain and will be out of action for about a month, reporting to the National Cricket Academy for recovery.

Mohammed Shami has featured in just 2 matches in the 2024/25 Vijay Hazare Trophy

Mohammed Shami has featured in only two matches for Bengal in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he has taken two wickets at a commendable economy rate of 4.25, showcasing his control with the ball.

Bengal is set to play Haryana in the preliminary quarterfinal on January 9 in Baroda, a crucial match for Bengal’s progression. All eyes will be on Shami as he takes on key players like Ankit Kumar and Himanshu Rana, with the outcome of this do-or-die game determining Bengal’s fate in the tournament.
