In a significant move, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have named former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson as their new Assistant Coach ahead of the IPL 2026 retention deadline. All franchises are required to submit their list of retained and released players by Saturday, November 15.
The franchise confirmed the appointment through a post on their official X handle, extending a warm welcome to Watson ahead of the new season. The former cricketer remains one of the most successful overseas players in IPL history.
“What a day, Watt-o Knight! 🙌Welcome to the Family, @ShaneRWatson33💜,” the franchise wrote.

Shane Watson is a two-time IPL Most Valuable Player (MVP) award winner. He first earned the honor in 2008 when Rajasthan Royals (RR) clinched the inaugural IPL title, and claimed it again in 2013, also with RR. Over his IPL career spanning 145 matches, Watson began his journey with RR and later went on to represent Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
The versatile all-rounder amassed 3,874 runs, including four centuries and 21 fifties, while also taking 92 wickets. A three-time IPL champion, he lifted the trophy once with RR in 2008 and twice with CSK in 2018 and 2021. Watson now joins the Kolkata Knight Riders’ coaching team alongside Head Coach Abhishek Nayar and Mentor Dwayne Bravo.
KKR Endure Disappointing IPL 2025 Campaign
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), who lifted their third IPL trophy in 2024, struggled to replicate their success in the following season. The defending champions failed to qualify for the playoffs in IPL 2025, finishing eighth in the standings with only five wins from 14 league matches.
The decision to part ways with Shreyas Iyer, who had captained them to the 2024 title, proved costly. Although Ajinkya Rahane provided steady leadership, he couldn’t guide the side into the top four. Despite the setback, KKR remain one of the IPL’s most successful franchises, with three titles to their name.
They clinched their first championship in 2012 by defeating Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the final, and followed it up with another win in 2014 against Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings). Heading into IPL 2026, KKR will be determined to bounce back stronger and push for their fourth title.
