India’s seasoned all-rounder Shardul Thakur made a compelling case for a spot in the playing XI for the first Test against England, starting June 20. During an intra-squad warm-up match between India and India A, Thakur delivered a standout performance by scoring an unbeaten 122.
This impressive knock came against a high-quality bowling attack featuring Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, and Mohammed Siraj. Given that the all-rounder position is likely to be a toss-up between Shardul and Nitish Kumar Reddy, this innings has arrived at a crucial time for Thakur, who last played a Test in 2023. With the series opener in Leeds around the corner, his innings strengthens his chances of a comeback into the red-ball format.
Kuldeep Yadav Gears Up in Ashwin’s Absence
With R Ashwin’s retirement leaving a void, India’s spin department is undergoing a reshuffle. Kuldeep Yadav, the only specialist spinner in the current squad, is using this opportunity to prepare alongside Ravindra Jadeja. While Jadeja brings experience with 12 Tests in English conditions, Kuldeep has just one Test appearance in England where he bowled only nine overs.
The duo is expected to shoulder the spin responsibilities throughout the five-match series. Kuldeep, now more confident after initial pitch assessments, believes the conditions might favour spinners as the series progresses. His increased interaction with Jadeja on tour signals a critical phase in his red-ball journey.
Spinners Expect Turn as Series Progresses
While the Leeds pitch might not offer much assistance, other venues like Birmingham, Lord’s, and The Oval are expected to help the spinners. Speaking about the intra-squad game, Kuldeep observed, “The wickets are looking good for spinners. It has been good for batting (in Intra Squad game here). First day there was moisture, seamers got help but as the game progressed, spinners got in the game.”
The left-arm wrist spinner, who hasn’t yet bowled in the practice game, remains hopeful that he will get purchase from the pitches during the series. “There is bounce for spinners on this surface. Today is day three, I am yet to bowl. The ball is turning a bit and I hope it is the same in the series as well,” he said. Kuldeep’s confidence and form could be a significant factor for India, especially in the later stages of matches.
