With the Asia Cup 2025 approaching, Shivam Dube has emerged as a central figure in India’s T20 plans. Known primarily for his big-hitting ability in the middle order, Dube is now being seen as more than just a batting powerhouse.
Bowling coach Morne Morkel recently underlined the team management’s intention to utilize him as a reliable medium-pace option who can consistently deliver four overs in every match if required. This development positions Dube as a valuable backup seamer, adding depth and flexibility to India’s bowling attack in high-pressure games.
Morkel highlighted that the strategy is in line with head coach Gautam Gambhir’s philosophy of building a multi-dimensional squad. The aim is to ensure every player contributes across departments, reducing reliance on specialists in a fast-changing T20 environment.
Gambhir’s Vision for All-Round Depth
Under Gambhir’s leadership, India is looking to prioritize utility cricketers who can adapt to multiple roles on the field. Morkel explained that in today’s T20 cricket, no player can afford to focus on just one skill. Every individual is expected to step up, whether with the bat, ball, or in the field. Dube’s ability to balance aggressive batting with effective medium pace makes him the ideal embodiment of this vision.
The South African legend stressed the importance of having options beyond the frontline bowlers. “For me, it’s crucial to have someone like Shivam who can bowl four overs,” Morkel noted during a training session at the ICC Academy. He pointed out that Dube’s contribution as a sixth or even seventh bowling option could prove decisive when match situations demand variety or when the conditions shift unexpectedly.
Preparing for the T20 World Cup Challenge
India’s long-term focus remains the upcoming T20 World Cup, and strengthening the squad’s depth is a priority. The team management believes that a player like Dube not only provides balance but also gives the captain tactical freedom to rotate bowlers without compromising on batting firepower. In unpredictable T20 contests, where momentum can swing rapidly, the presence of a versatile all-rounder often makes the difference.
Morkel summed it up by emphasizing adaptability: India wants players who can take responsibility across formats and situations. As Dube prepares for the Asia Cup, his dual role is set to be tested. If he succeeds in fulfilling the expectation of bowling four overs consistently while continuing his explosive batting, India could gain a crucial edge heading into the global tournament.
