The England Cricket team were in for a bitter shock as they were floored for mere 85 runs in the first innings by Ireland. Fresh from a historic World Cup win, Joe Root”s men went into the game at Lord”s as clear favorites. Ahead of the Ashes, the management must have considered the one-off Test match as a dress rehearsal for the forthcoming Tests against Australia.
England skittled out for 85
The Brits failed to survive till lunch as they were bundled out in 23.4 overs. Wrecker-in-chief TJ Murtagh scalped five wickets and conceded 13 runs in nine overs. The 37-year-old pacer bagged the wickets of the openers- Rory Burns and Jason Roy before creating in-roads to the middle-order. At the break, he said it was a dream for him to play at the Lord”s and to get a mention in the honor”s board is surreal.

On being asked if he could narrate all the happenings in the first few hours of play, Murtagh said “No, not quite sure what”s happened there the last two hours, to be honest. It”s a dream to play here, but to get on the honors board, it”s a fantastic first session. Thought it would take longer than that, everyone bowled really well, the ball came out nicely and did a bit off the wicket. I should know how to bowl at this ground, I”ve been here long enough. Just get it up there, let the pitch do the work. He was fantastic, especially after getting a wicket with a no-ball early on. I didn”t think I”d be on the away board when I first started playing, but I”ll take it.”

Joe Denly top-scored for England with 23 while Sam Curran and Olly Stone got to two-figure marks. Former England skipper Michael Vaughan saw the funny side to it. In a series of tweets, the ex-cricketer said, “What we witnessed 10 days ago at Lords was remarkable …. I think this tops it.”
