Shreyas Iyer Likely To Get Back His BCCI Central Contract After Impressive Champions Trophy Performance: Reports
Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer has been a key contributor for India in the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025, amassing 195 runs in four matches at a strike rate of 79.92. His performances have often provided stability to the team, whether setting up an innings or chasing a target. Due to his recent form in the ICC tournament, Indian media reports suggest that the 30-year-old is likely to regain his central contract with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Despite scoring 530 runs at a strike rate of 113.25 in the 2023 ODI World Cup, Iyer was surprisingly left out of BCCI’s central contracts last year. However, his consistency in the 50-over format has reaffirmed his place as India’s preferred No. 4 batter. Along with Iyer, Ishan Kishan was also excluded from the contracts, and since 2023, Kishan has not played a single match for India.

A Turning Point in Iyer’s Career

The Champions Trophy 2025 has marked a resurgence in Iyer’s international career. Though he started the tournament with a modest 15 runs off 17 balls against Bangladesh, he bounced back with a crucial 56-run knock from 67 balls against Pakistan, maintaining a strike rate of 83.58. His best performance came against New Zealand, where he scored a composed 79 runs. In the semi-final against Australia, he played a resilient knock of 45 runs from 62 balls at a strike rate of 72.58.

Iyer’s consistency has played a major role in India’s unbeaten run in the tournament. His ability to handle pressure and anchor the innings has been crucial in high-stakes encounters.

Iyer’s Journey in International Cricket

Since making his T20I debut in November 2017, Iyer has played 51 matches, accumulating 1104 runs at a strike rate of 136.12. His ODI debut came a month later, on December 10, 2017, and he has since featured in 69 matches, scoring 2797 runs at a strike rate of 100.50. The 50-over format has been his strong suit, where he has consistently delivered impactful performances. In the longer format, Iyer made his Test debut in 2021, playing 14 matches and scoring 811 runs.

As India prepares to face New Zealand in the Champions Trophy 2025 final on March 9 in Dubai, Iyer will be eager to continue his fine form and help his team secure the prestigious title.
