Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer recently shared a funny story behind his new nickname, ‘Sarpanch Saab’, which emerged during the IPL 2025 season. PBKS are gearing up to face Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the final on Tuesday, June 3, in Ahmedabad.
As the leader of the team, Iyer earned the nickname ‘Sarpanch Saab’, a term that loosely means ‘village head’ or ‘group leader’. While speaking with team co-owner Preity Zinta, he recounted the amusing incident that led to the moniker.
“I seriously have no idea about it. I’ve got no clue how I got this name. I am sure it came from the management. They gave me this tag and it has been tagged along. Wherever I go in Punjab right now, whenever I get out of the hotel they’re like Sarpanch Saab give us a picture.”
“That has happened. I remember this incident where we were coming back from the ground we were stopped at the signal and there was this car with five guys. They saw me sitting in the car and they were like Sarpanch saab make us win this year then we will name a road here in your name,” he said.

Shreyas Iyer Shines With The Bat In IPL 2025
Since being appointed captain of Punjab Kings (PBKS) for IPL 2025, Shreyas Iyer has taken on the role with great responsibility, leading by example. Under his leadership, PBKS have reached the final for the first time in 11 years, and his personal performance with the bat has been equally outstanding.
Iyer has emerged as the team’s top run-scorer this season, amassing 603 runs in 16 games at an impressive average of 54.81 and a striking strike rate of 175.80, including six fifties. His standout performance came in Qualifier 2 against Mumbai Indians (MI), where he smashed an unbeaten 87 off just 41 deliveries, playing a pivotal role in securing PBKS’s place in the final.
