Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has thrown his weight behind Shreyas Iyer to return as the skipper of Delhi Capitals when the season restarts. Iyer was ruled out initially of IPL 2021 after injuring his left shoulder and was in line for a surgery. Having undergone the surgery in April, Iyer is recovering well and is expected to be fit by the time the second half of the season starts.
Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals won six out of eight games under the captaincy of Rishabh Pant and were placed at the top of the points table before the season was suspended.
Shreyas Iyer Walks In As Delhi Capitals Skipper: Aakash Chopra
“Hundred percent man. There is no doubt in it. Fit and available, Shreyas Iyer walks in as a captain, bats at No.3. Then you can play Nortje alongside Rabada, Shimron Hetmyer, Marcus Stoinis. Suddenly the Delhi team, which is already very strong and is at No.1 at the moment, will become even more strong. Rules are definitely not like that once you are ruled out, you cannot come back. When fit and available, come back and play,” he added.
Iyer took over the captaincy from Gautam Gambhir back in 2018 after the latter stepped down. Since then he has successfully led the side and even reached the final of IPL 2020 in the UAE. DC remain one of the favourites to lift the title and going by the season they’ve had so far, there’s no doubt that the franchise would look to go all the way this time whenever the remainder of the season resumes.
Meanwhile, the BCCI is still figuring out ways to held the second half of the season. They are looking at a possible window in September to host the remaining season. However, the venue has not been discussed as yet with BCCI President Sourav Ganguly confirming that the second half of the season will not be held in India with rising COVID cases.
