Shubman Gill became fifth Indian batter to hit double century in ODIs

Shubman Gill produced a masterclass by becoming the fifth Indian to hit a double century in the ODI format. He achieved the milestone during the first match against New Zealand played at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad on 18 January 2023.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bat first. Shubman Gill continued from where he left in the 3rd ODI against Sri Lanka at Trivandrum. The Indian openers provided a flying start putting pressure on New Zealand bowling. Gill looked in great touch taking on the inexperienced Kiwi bowling lineup.

The Indian team lost 2 quick wickets in the form of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Rohit and Gill added 60 runs for the opening wicket. Gill was given a reprieve as Tom Latham missed a stumping chance. After that chance, Shubman Gill completed his fifty with six off 52 balls. Ishan Kishan could not contribute to the middle order. Surya Kumar Yadav and Gill kept the momentum going for India taking singles and hitting boundaries.

Daryl Mitchell provided the breakthrough getting rid of Surya ending 65 runs for the 4th wicket. Gill continued his attacking style of play completing his 3rd ODI century off 87 balls. He was given another chance. Hardik Pandya and Gill looked impressive putting pressure on New Zealand bowlers.

Itwas dismissed in a controversial manner by Mitchell. Hardik and Gill added 74 runs for the 5th wicket. Gill provided an attacking display of strokes completing his 150 off 122 balls. Despite losing wickets at the other end, Gill looked in complete control smashing sixes with ease. Gill smashed 3 successive sixes off Lockie Ferguson in the 49th over to complete his double century off 145 balls.

He was eventually dismissed for 208 off 149 balls as Glenn Phillips took a stunning catch to end a sensational inning by Gill. Thanks to his brilliant knock, India posted a massive total of 349 for 8. During this innings, he became the fastest to hit 1000 ODI runs. He posted the highest induvial score by an Indian against New Zealand in the ODI format and also became the youngest to hit a double century.

Indian batters to hit a double century in ODIS

Sachin Tendulkar became the first-ever batter from India to hit a double century in the ODI format. He achieved this milestone against South Africa on 24th Feb 2010 at Captain Roop Singh Stadium, Gwalior. Rohit Sharma has 3 double centuries to his name with a record score of 264 against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on 13 November 2014.

Virender Sehwag scored 219 against West Indies at Holkar Stadium, Indore on 8 December 2011. Ishan Kishan joined the list of double centurions for India in ODI during the 3rd ODI match against Bangladesh at Zahur Chaudhary Stadium, Chattogram on 10 December 2022.

The other batters to hit a double century in ODI include Martin Guptill of New Zealand. He made 237 not out against West Indies in the 2015 World Cup quarterfinals match at Westpac Stadium, Wellington on 21 March 2015. Chris Gayle also made a double century in the same tournament against Zimbabwe at Manuka Oval, Canberra on 24 Feb 2015.

Fakhar Zaman made 210 not out against Zimbabwe played at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo on 20 July 2018.
