Shubman Gill Begins Rehab: India Star Set for Long-Awaited Comeback

Shubman Gill sustained a neck injury on Day 2 of the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata, which forced him to retire hurt mid-innings and be rushed to hospital for medical evaluation.

He was kept under observation overnight and discharged the next day, but remained under close monitoring by the medical team of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Subsequent scans and assessments were undertaken in Mumbai to determine the exact nature of the injury — whether it was a simple muscular spasm or something more serious such as a nerve-related issue.

Rehab Begins: Path to Comeback

After these medical evaluations, Gill is now all set to begin a structured rehabilitation process. He is expected to check into the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru from December 1, 2025.    According to reports, once he enters rehab, he could resume batting sessions later in the week — which marks a significant milestone in his recovery timeline.

The update from India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel was cautiously optimistic: he said he spoke with Gill recently and found him “recovering well,” which bodes well for a return — eventually.

What It Means for Team India & Next Steps

Given the severity of the injury — which some reports describe as a nerve-related problem rather than a mere spasm — initial assessments had suggested that Gill might be sidelined for the remainder of 2025.    Consequently, he was ruled out of the second Test, the upcoming ODI series and likely the T20I series against South Africa.

However, with rehab underway and early signs of positive recovery, there is renewed hope that — if all goes well — he could gradually return to action by early 2026, possibly timed around India’s home white-ball commitments (e.g. the series against New Zealand). For now, the selectors and medical team will continue to monitor his progress carefully before giving him the green light for match-play.
