Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill arrived at the squad’s base in Ahmedabad on Monday, March 18th, gearing up for the upcoming 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Following Hardik Pandya’s move to the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the off-season, Gill was appointed as the franchise’s new skipper.
Gill, who recently featured in the Indian team’s victorious 4-1 Test series against England on home turf, had a standout performance after a challenging start as a No.3 batsman. He amassed 452 runs in nine innings during the series, securing the second spot on the run-scoring charts, just behind Yashavi Jaiswal.
Since moving to the Gujarat Titans from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) before the 2022 IPL season, he has been consistently scoring runs. Gill accumulated 890 runs in 17 innings during the 2023 campaign, which included three centuries, contributing significantly to GT’s runner-up finish.

The early success of the GT franchise owes much to the significant contribution of head coach Ashish Nehra, particularly his rapport with former captain Hardik Pandya. With Gill gearing up for his inaugural challenge as captain, the team will need to build new dynamics from the ground up.
“We as a franchise, as a support staff, are really excited to help him grow as a person more than as a captain. If he grows as a person, then he will definitely be a better captain going forward,” Nehra said in a recent interview with ESPNcricinfo.
Gill has capable and seasoned leaders such as Kane Williamson and Rashid Khan to lean on for guidance. It will be his responsibility to utilize the available resources effectively to uphold the high standards that GT has established within a brief period.
