Shubman Gill was fluent throughout his debut Test knock of 45 in India’s first innings of the second Test in Melbourne. His innings was decorated by eight boundaries as he faced 65 balls. India ended day 2 on 277 for five with a vital lead of 82 runs with Ajinkya Rahane scoring an unbeaten 104 and Ravindra Jadeja unbeaten on 40 at stumps. Gill showed immense concentration despite the early fall of Mayank Agarwal as he weathered the storm of the Australian papers at the fag end of day 1.
In the post-match presser after the day’s play, Shubman Gill spoke about his innings. He said that the pitch was lively at the start of his innings but he was focused on remaining unbeaten at the end of Day 1.

“When I came in to bat, there was something in the pitch and the pitch was lively. The only thing which I told myself was that no matter what’s happening on the pitch or what’s happening around me, I should be able to play my game and I should be able to express myself, play with intent. That was my thought process throughout my innings.”
Should Have Seen Cummins Off: Shubman Gill
Gill further said that he was unhappy with the way he was dismissed after he looked set for a big score. He was edgy to start off but got into his groove as he faced more and more deliveries. Ultimately he was dismissed by Pat Cummins who induced him into driving a ball outside his off-stump as he edged one through to Tim Paine.
“I’m not really happy with the way I got out. It was the last ball of Cummins’s spell and I should have seen it off. It was a loose shot to play at that moment. But overall, my goal was to play with intent and build partnerships, and I managed it to an extent,” Gill said via a virtual press conference after stumps on Day 2.
Gill also credited his captain Ajinkya Rahane who played a captains’ knock scoring his 12th Test ton for India and his eighth three-figure score overseas.
