Shubman Gill Questions England’s Sportsmanship Ahead Of The 5th Test

Indian captain Shubman Gill recently voiced strong criticism of England’s tactics during the third Test at Lord’s. He accused England’s openers of intentionally wasting time near the end of Day 3, pointing out that they took almost 90 seconds to come out after the fall of a wicket—an act he believes was deliberately aimed at slowing down the game. Gill expressed disappointment, stating that such actions are not in line with the spirit of cricket.

His frustration reached a boiling point when he had a heated exchange with Zak Crawley, though he later clarified that his outburst was due to a series of such events throughout the match rather than a single incident. England skipper Ben Stokes defended his team, insisting that they operated within the game’s laws and that they wouldn’t be pushed around by their opponents.

Support for Jadeja and Sundar Amid Handshake Row

The tension between the two sides didn’t end at Lord’s. During the fourth Test, England offered an early handshake, expecting India to settle for a draw. However, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar chose to continue batting in pursuit of individual centuries.

Gill backed his teammates’ decision, stating that a Test century holds immense value and should not be given up lightly. He dismissed criticism suggesting unsportsmanlike conduct, instead highlighting the importance of personal milestones in the longer format of the game. For Gill, the decision to bat on wasn’t about being difficult—it was about respecting the game and the effort it takes to reach such achievements.

A Clash of Cricketing Cultures

Gill’s comments have sparked a broader conversation about differing standards of sportsmanship and game conduct. While some in the cricketing community, like former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik, supported Gill’s stance, others like ex-England captain Nasser Hussain criticized his reactions. The incidents have shone a light on the cultural contrasts in how cricket is played and perceived.

England’s tactics were seen by many Indian fans and players as pushing the boundaries of fair play, while English players viewed them as strategic and within the rules. Gill, however, emphasized that while competition is natural, there is a line that should not be crossed—and in this series, he believes that line was breached more than once.
