India’s young batting star Shubman Gill shared an honest and heartfelt assessment of the team’s 22-run defeat against England in the third Test at Lord’s. Despite the loss, Gill expressed pride in the team’s resilience and the fierce battle they put up over five grueling days of Test cricket.
According to him, the match was a great display of competitiveness and went down to the wire, making it one of the closest encounters in recent memory.
“It was an extremely close Test match,” Gill said at the post-match presentation. “It went all five days and was decided in the last session. That’s the kind of intensity you want in a Test series.”
He emphasized that the players fought hard till the end, especially in the final innings, which nearly turned the game in India’s favour.
Missed Opportunities and Key Moments
While commending the team’s efforts, Gill pointed out a few critical moments that cost India the game. He believed the team needed at least one or two solid 50-run partnerships in the second innings to successfully chase down the target. “We had batting depth and confidence, but we just couldn’t stitch together the partnerships we needed,” he explained.
One moment that particularly stood out was Rishabh Pant’s unfortunate run-out in the first innings. Pant had been playing positively and looked set for a big score when a mix-up ended his stay at the crease. Gill admitted that such moments can swing momentum in a tightly contested game like this. Had Pant stayed longer, the deficit might have been smaller and India’s chase more manageable.
Jadeja’s Bravery and India’s Fighting Spirit
Despite the disappointment, Gill highlighted Ravindra Jadeja’s gritty unbeaten 61 off 181 deliveries in the second innings. He called Jadeja’s effort “heroic” as the all-rounder almost pulled off a historic win while batting with tailenders Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. The lower order showed grit, defending doggedly and adding precious runs under immense pressure.
Gill’s remarks captured the emotional intensity of the Test and the fine margins that define such high-stakes matches. While India fell short, the team’s fightback—led by Jadeja and supported by a determined bowling and batting effort—left a strong impression. Gill’s candid evaluation was not just a reflection of what went wrong but also a tribute to the team’s character and spirit.
