Shubman Gill has continued his golden run in the India vs England Test series by setting a new milestone. On the first day of the fifth Test at The Oval, Gill etched his name into the history books by becoming the Indian captain with the most runs in a single Test series.
The 25-year-old right-hander surpassed the previous record held by legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar, who had scored 732 runs in six matches during the 1978-79 series against the West Indies. Gill achieved the feat when he reached 11 runs in the fifth Test, hitting a boundary off Jamie Overton in the 21st over. With that shot, he took his series tally to 733 runs, eclipsing Gavaskar’s 45-year-old record.
Gill in Elite Company Among Captains Globally
With his ongoing tally of 733 runs, Gill is now third on the all-time list of most runs scored in a Test series by a captain. The record is still held by Australia’s Don Bradman, who amassed 810 runs in five matches during the 1936–37 Ashes series. Bradman’s achievement, which has stood unchallenged for 88 years, could be threatened if Gill continues to pile on the runs.
He needs at least 89 more runs to overtake the Australian legend. Other notable captains on the list include England’s Graham Gooch (752 runs in 1990 vs India), David Gower (732 in 1985 vs Australia), and West Indies great Garry Sobers (722 in 1966 vs England). Gill’s rise to this list shows not just consistency but remarkable leadership with the bat.
Gill Eyes More Records in India-England Test History
Gill is also on the verge of surpassing several other records. In India-England Test history, the most runs scored in a single series is 752 by Graham Gooch during the 1990 series. Currently, Gill stands just 19 runs behind that landmark. He is also chasing the all-time record for most runs in any Test series for India, which remains with Sunil Gavaskar.
Gavaskar’s 774 runs in just four matches against the West Indies in 1971 still top the chart. Gill, now with 733, is second on that list, followed closely by his teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored 712 runs against England in the 2024 series. With more innings to come, Gill’s sensational run is not only rewriting record books but redefining expectations from modern Indian Test captains.
