Shubman Gill Speaks Out As India Bounce Back To Level Series With Crushing Win Over England

India’s Test captain Shubman Gill expressed immense delight over the team’s performance at Edgbaston, Birmingham, noting how everything clicked perfectly. Gill mentioned he wasn’t anticipating a tense run-chase like the one at Headingley, as their commanding first-innings score had already put them in a strong position.

The visitors went on to claim their maiden Test victory at Edgbaston, drawing level in the five-match series. After piling up a massive 587 in the first innings and securing a 180-run lead, India set England a daunting target of 608. The hosts could only muster 271 in reply.

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Gill said he was thrilled with how the team bounced back, learning from the mistakes made in the Leeds defeat. As per ESPN Cricinfo, he stated:

“All the things we spoke about after the last game, we were spot on with all of those things. I think the way we came back with our bowling and fielding was tremendous to see. On this kind of wicket we knew that if we got 400-500 runs, it would be enough. Not every game will be like Headingley.”

In the first Test at Leeds, Team India’s fielding let them down as they missed several key catches, which ultimately helped England successfully chase down 371 with five wickets in hand. However, India showed significant improvement in the second Test, barely putting a foot wrong in the field. Shubman Gill led from the front with the bat, delivering captain’s knocks in both innings with scores of 269 and 161.

Shubman Gill Praises Akash Deep’s Impactful Performance

Akash Deep, who came into the side in place of Jasprit Bumrah, made a huge impact by taking 10 wickets in the second Test. Shubman Gill noted that the pacer delivered a near-perfect performance, even on a pitch that offered minimal support. As quoted by ESPN Cricinfo, the Punjab-born captain said:

“I think he [Akash Deep] bowled with so much heart and the areas and the lengths that he hit, he was just getting the ball to move both ways. On wickets like these, it’s very difficult to get the ball moving in both directions and he was able to do that. He was just magnificent for us.”
