So Sorry, Please Don’t Ban Me: When Virat Kohli Pleaded To Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle

Indian Skipper Virat Kohli is known for his aggression on the field. He has often been at the receiving end of the criticism for his on-field behavior. In one such incident, the right-handed batsman had to plead to the match referee.

In 2011/12 India’s tour of Australia, Virat Kohli was on the cusp of getting dropped from the Indian playing XI. He played the first test matches but only managed to score 43 runs in four innings. But it was the then Indian skipper, MS Dhoni who showed faith in the youngster. Though Kohli had Dhoni’s backing, he was not a certain starter in the playing XI, due to his on-field behavior.

I’m so sorry, please don’t ban me! : Virat Kohli

During the second test match at Sydney, Virat Kohli was involved in an unruly interaction with the crowd. While fielding at the boundary rope, he was mocked by the crowd. Irked by the crowd’s behavior Virat Kohli, made an ugly gesture. This was out in the papers the next day, after which the match referee Ranjan Madugalle gave him an earful.

“The match referee [Ranjan Madugalle] called me to his room the next day and I’m like, ‘What’s wrong?’. He said, ‘What happened at the boundary yesterday?’. I said, ‘Nothing, it was a bit of banter’. Then he threw the newspaper in front of me and there was this big image of me flicking on the front page and I said, ‘I’m so sorry, please don’t ban me!’. I got away with that one. He was a nice guy, he understood I was young and these things happen.” Kohli had said as reported by Times Now.

Virat Kohli ended the tour as the highest run-getter for India with 300 runs in four matches at an average of 37.50. The Delhi batsman bettered his average in the 2014/15 tour of Australia. He scored 692 runs in four matches at an average of 86.50. He also led the Indian team to a 2-1 over the Aussies in the 2018/2019 season.
