The Board of Control for Cricket in India, considering the escalating politicking between India and Pakistan, suspended the Indian Premier League for one week in 2025. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly expressed confidence that the BCCI could resume the tournament within a week due to its competent handling of any difficult situation.
Ganguly gave the example of COVID-19, where despite all opposition, the IPL was still managed very well in 2021. “Even where there were so many problems in 2020 and 2021, the IPL was still completed. The BCCI is so efficient that it will certainly complete the IPL,” he told India Today. Ganguly also indicated that the seven-day break wouldn’t be an obstacle to the tournament’s eventual completion and that the schedule could, in fact, be extended accordingly as necessary.
Sourav Ganguly’s Vote of Confidence in BCCI

Every decision of the BCCI to suspend IPL 2025 arose out of the current security situation in the nation, keeping players, staff, and fans as the highest priority of safety. The board stated that it stands in solidarity with the Indian Armed Forces and that the national interest is above sports. The suspension of the IPL follows a cancellation of a match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala following air raid alert in cities nearby.³
The BCCI extended gratitude to its stakeholders, including the official broadcasters, Jiostar, and the title sponsors, TATA. This having been said, the board will assess the situation and issue more updates relating to the revised schedule and venues in due course. It is speculated that maybe the remaining 16 games will be scheduled for September and will be slated in lieu of the Asia Cup expected in September.
Ganguly’s confidence in BCCI to deal with the situation and complete the IPL 2025 was emotionally reassuring for the fans and stakeholders. Since the original calendar was to finish on the 25th of May in Kolkata, the BCCI will have to work on the revised calendar to carry out the successful completion of this league.
