Sourav Ganguly is one of the most influential Indian captains of all time. Under his leadership, India started producing match-winners that helped India win all around the world. Ganguly spotted talent extremely well in his captaincy tenure and always backed them.

The former India captain identified players such as Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Ashish Nehra, Zaheer Khan. These players proved their mettle and played for India for many years. They were an integral of MS Dhoni’s side that created history in 2011 by winning the world cup at home.

Sourav Ganguly said that these players were his biggest legacy that he left behind as Indian captain. They were part of the world cup winning squad and that’s a legacy he is extremely happy about. All players matured under Ganguly’s captaincy and were able to help India win at home and overseas conditions.

“That 2011 World Cup-winning team had seven or eight players who started their careers under me. The likes of Virender Sehwag, Dhoni himself, Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh, Ashish Nehra. So I think that’s a legacy which I was extremely happy to leave behind as a captain. And that was my biggest legacy that I left a side which could win at home and away from home,” Sourav Ganguly said while talking about his legacy as captain in an online lecture with Unacademy.

Sourav Ganguly also recalled the memories when MS Dhoni and his team won the world cup at Wankhade stadium. In 2003, India lost to Australia in the final when Ganguly was leading the side. He stated that after the 2003 final loss he was happy to see Dhoni lifting the world cup which he saw live on the ground.

“I remember I was at the Wankhede Stadium that night and I came down from the commentary box to watch Dhoni and the team go around the ground. In 2003 the team which I was the captain lost the final to Australia so I was so happy to see Dhoni have the opportunity to win that trophy”, Ganguly said.
