Ricky Ponting will likely be replaced as the Delhi Capitals‘ head coach for the 2024 IPL by former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, who currently holds the position of director of cricket for the team.
Without their regular captain Rishabh Pant, the Capitals had a forgettable season in which they placed ninth in the standings.
A Bengali publication reported that Ganguly would succeed Ponting as the team’s head coach for the upcoming season and that the former captain of India would continue to serve as DC’s director of cricket.
Ponting, who guided Mumbai Indians to victory in the IPL in 2015, joined DC in 2018. Ponting led DC to their first IPL final in 2020 and led them to the league’s top spot in 2021 within two years of taking over.
Despite the all-rounder’s excellent form, he received criticism for placing Axar Patel lower in the order to bat. Fans and experts were not pleased with Ponting’s decision to give out-of-sorts Prithvi Shaw so many opportunities, nor with his muddled decision to include Sarfaraz Khan in the starting XI.
In the case of Ganguly, he was initially a member of the DC team in 2019, but left the team to take the helm of the BCCI before joining the Capitals for the 2023 season.
Rishabh Pant will lead the team again next year for the capitals, who have not provided an official update on the situation. Pant missed the just-concluded season due to injuries sustained in a car accident.
