South African spinner Sean Whitehead achieved the rare feat of picking all ten wickets in an innings of a match during a first-class match on Saturday. He registered the best bowling figures in South African domestic cricket in 115 years.
Playing in the ongoing 4-Day Franchise series for the South Western Districts in Division 2, Sean took 10 wickets conceding just 36 runs in the last innings. He also took 5/64 in the Eastern side’s first innings of the match. Whitehead’s 10/36 is the second-best in an innings in the South African domestic circuit. The record still belongs to the spinner, Bert Vogler, who took 10/26 for Eastern Province against Griqualand West in 1906.
Sean Whitehead has picked up 39 wickets in 17 innings in first-class cricket, at an average of 25.64. He has three five-wicket hauls and one ten-wicket haul to his name. The leg-spinner has also scored 481 first-class runs at an average of 37.00, including a century.
