Spleen Injury Sidelines Shreyas Iyer, IPL Comeback Also Uncertain

India’s middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer is expected to remain sidelined from international cricket for an extended period, with indications that he may not return before March 2026. According to a senior cricket board source, Iyer’s recovery is still ongoing after suffering a serious injury during the third ODI against Australia in late October.

The 30-year-old endured a lacerated spleen along with internal bleeding, a combination that required immediate hospitalisation in Sydney. Despite steady improvement, the injury is significant enough to rule him out of India’s upcoming ODI series against both South Africa and New Zealand. The update further suggests that his comeback before the next edition of the IPL is highly unlikely.

Medical Care And Rehabilitation Efforts

The cricket board issued a statement on November 1 confirming that Iyer had been discharged from a Sydney hospital, with medical experts in both Australia and India satisfied with his early recovery. Team doctor Rizwan Khan stayed alongside Iyer throughout his hospitalisation to ensure continuity of care. The board also expressed deep appreciation toward Dr Kouroush Haghigi and his medical team in Sydney, as well as Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, for their coordinated treatment approach.

After his discharge, Iyer continued to remain in Sydney for follow-up check-ups and monitoring. The latest update suggests he may soon travel back to India, but even after returning home, he is expected to require several more months of rest, rehabilitation, and fitness rebuilding before even considering a return to competitive cricket. His focus will not just be on healing but also regaining full match readiness, something that typically demands time after such a serious internal injury.

Performances Before The Injury

Before the unfortunate incident, Iyer had shown promising form during the Australia ODI series. He accumulated 72 runs across two matches, highlighted by a fighting 61 off 77 balls in the Adelaide game, where he shared a crucial century partnership with skipper Rohit Sharma. His overall performance this year further reflects his consistency.

Across 11 matches and 10 innings, Iyer amassed 496 runs at an impressive average of 49.60 and a strike rate of 89.53. He registered five half-centuries, with his highest being a solid 79. These performances underline the value he brought to India’s middle order and the significance of his absence in the coming months. His recovery remains the priority, with hopes that he will eventually return fully fit and ready to resume his role in the national squad.
