Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is going through a difficult phase in recent times. A couple of months ago, police arrested fast bowler Shehan Madushanka for possessing illegal drugs. In the wake of the incident, SLC suspended the cricketer from all forms of cricket.

Following that, former Sri Lanka sports minister claimed that some cricketers sold the 2011 World Cup final. After thorough investigation and interrogation, police had to drop the case due to no conclusive evidence.

So far, Kusal Mendis has played 44 Tests and 76 ODIs for Sri Lanka.  2,995 runs at an average of 37 in Tests and 2,167 runs at an average of 30 in the ODIs. He was also a part of the 2019 World Cup squad. The 25-year-old was part of the national squad which had resumed training after the COVID-19 lockdown.
