As per reports circling in the media, Sri Lanka is set to host the 2022 Asia Cup. The event will be played in September next year. The tournament is now being postponed since last year with periodic spells of the COVID virus. The tournament will be played in the 20-over format followed by the 50-over format in 2023.
Veteran Geo News journalist Arfa Feroz Zake informed about the same. He took it to his official Twitter account to confirm the news of Sri Lanka hosting the tournament. “🇱🇰🏏 Sri Lanka will host the fifteenth edition of Asia Cup in September 2022 in T20 format. This tournament was earlier to be hosted by Pakistan Cricket Board who exchanged hosting rights with SLC,” the tweet read.

Meanwhile, PCB Chairman Ramiz Raja earlier confirmed that 2023 edition of the Asia Cup will be played in Pakistan and they will not host the tournament at any other venue.
The ACC meeting, chaired by Jay Shah, the secretary of BCCI, has recognised that it is the turn of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to host the event and the Pakistan board, as it has been maintaining in the recent times, has declared that it will not host the event at a neutral venue, but in Pakistan only.
The 2016 edition was the first time that the tournament was played in the 20-over format followed by the 2018 season which was played in the 50-over format. The previous edition of the high-profile event was played in 50 over format considering the upcoming 2019 World Cup.
With the next T20 World Cup scheduled in 2022 in Australia in October-November 2022, it is only wise that the Asia Cup is also played in the same format.
As the ICC World Cup is scheduled in October-November of 2023, understandably the Asia Cup will be held in the middle of that year with the IPL set for the first half of the year.
Similarly, next year’s T20 Asia Cup coincides with the T20 World Cup, scheduled next October-November, in Australia. The ACC wants to host the T20 Asia Cup before that global event, most likely in September.
