Australian batting mainstay Steve Smith did not shy away from expressing his concerns over the Melbourne Cricket Ground pitch after the fourth Ashes Test concluded well inside two days. Smith admitted that the surface offered excessive assistance to the bowlers, making conditions extremely challenging for batters from both sides.
He remarked that the pitch likely had “too much” in it, especially with around 10 millimetres of grass left on the wicket, which resulted in pronounced seam movement throughout the match. According to Smith, a slightly trimmed surface might have ensured a more even contest between bat and ball, something traditionally expected at the iconic Boxing Day Test.
Short-Lived Test Raises Broader Concerns
The Test, played at the historic Melbourne Cricket Ground, saw a staggering 36 wickets fall in just 142 overs, underlining how dominant the bowlers were. England emerged victorious, registering a rare Test win in Australia after a long gap, but the manner in which the match unfolded raised eyebrows.
Smith, along with England captain Ben Stokes, acknowledged that a Test match ending so quickly was far from ideal, particularly at a venue and occasion of such prestige. Both captains agreed that while challenging pitches are acceptable, balance is crucial to preserve the essence and spectacle of Test cricket.
Criticism From the Cricket Fraternity and Officials
The rapid finish sparked criticism from several former players and cricket analysts, many of whom labelled the pitch unfair and overly bowler-friendly. Some went as far as calling the contest lopsided, arguing that it deprived fans of a proper Test match experience.
Even administrators voiced their unease, with Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg stating that such short Tests are undesirable, not just from a sporting perspective but also commercially.
He highlighted that matches ending prematurely are damaging for spectators, broadcasters, and the overall image of the longest format. The match also set an unwanted statistical marker, producing the highest number of wickets on the opening day of an Ashes Test since 1909, further intensifying calls for tighter monitoring of pitch preparation standards going forward.
