Stuart Broad Receives CBE Honour In New Year’s Honours

Stuart Broad, the renowned former England fast bowler who bid adieu to international cricket earlier this year, has been honoured with a CBE in King Charles’ New Year’s Honours List. This prestigious accolade recognizes his exceptional achievements, including capturing over 800 wickets during his illustrious stint with the English team.

Alongside Broad, former opener and the senior men’s team batting coach were also distinguished with an OBE when the honours were formally announced on Saturday, December 30.

The title ‘CBE’ translates to ‘Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire,’ representing the highest distinction within the Order of the British Empire awards. Broad’s retirement from Test cricket post the Ashes 2023 series marked the culmination of a stellar career, where he played 167 Tests for England and secured 604 wickets, a feat second only to James Anderson in men’s cricket for England.

Both Broad and Trescothick have had their honors elevated, with Trescothick initially receiving an MBE in 2005 for his role during England Men’s historic Ashes win, and Broad being honored with an MBE in 2017.

Trescothick, aged 48, who retired from active cricket in 2019, earned this recognition for his commendable efforts as a mental health ambassador. Broad’s legacy in English cricket is further accentuated by his instrumental role in securing four Ashes victories, notably recording eight five-wicket hauls in these prestigious matches.

His standout performance came during the 2015 Ashes against Australia, where he achieved remarkable figures of 8/15, firmly establishing himself among the cricketing greats. Additionally, Broad’s prowess isn’t confined to bowling; he also showcased his batting skills, registering the second-highest Test score by a number 9 batsman with a commendable 169 against Pakistan in 2010.

Stuart Broad further says: “All I ever wanted to do was play cricket, and to have had the career that I was able to enjoy and to receive honours like this is incredibly special,” Broad said, as quoted by England and Wales Cricket Board.”

“I’m very proud that my contributions to cricket have been recognised, and it means a lot to me and my family.”

ECB chairman Richard Thompson responded: “They have been fantastic ambassadors for cricket for many years, and they have played a major role in helping build the profile of our game and in turn bringing more people into our sport. Stuart has long been an inspirational figure and will be remembered as a true great of English cricket, and the spectacular nature of his retirement this summer was the perfect farewell.”
