Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar believes Mayank Agarwal is the right choice to lead Punjab Kings in IPL 2022. Incidentally, Mayank and young left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh were retained by the franchise ahead of the mega auction.

With KL Rahul not being a part of Punjab now, the franchise will have a new captain next season. They have picked a couple of candidates who can lead the side but Gavaskar has placed his bet on Mayank.

The Karnataka cricketer had led the side once in the absence of KL Rahul before it was postponed due to the rise of COVID-19 cases. Speaking to Sports Today, Sunil Gavaskar said:

“I will look at the future, and I look at Mayank Agarwal. Because I do believe that Mayank has got leadership qualities.”

The 72-year-old added:

“He speaks well, he is a hardworking individual. He wants to get better than yesterday. He is very very very enthusiastic. He is a real team man. We can see that when he is playing for India. He is always ready to hop on to the field, even when he isn’t in the XI. So every aspect I think, Mayank Agarwal is somebody Punjab Kings should look as captain. And who knows, he could be considered in the future for national captaincy if he is consistent with his performances.”

Punjab Kings are one of the few old franchises that are yet to win the competition along with Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals.

Glenn Maxwell can be given the opportunity – Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar insisted that Australian player Glenn Maxwell could well be made the captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) team ahead of the IPL 2022 season. The position is vacant after Virat Kohli relinquished his duties after IPL 2021.

I think if Glenn Maxwell is given the responsibility then a different kind of Maxwell will be seen in IPL. Last year he batted brilliantly probably keeping the mega auction in mind, but he was retained after that, which was good, I guess, for him,” Gavaskar told Sports Tak.
