SunRisers Hyderabad Consider Moving Out of Hyderabad’s Home Venue; Here’s Why
IPL 2025: Sunrisers Hyderabad Retained, Released Players And Purse Remaining Before Mega Auction

SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH), the 2016 IPL champions, are reportedly considering shifting their home venue due to ongoing conflicts with the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA). Allegations of intimidation and blackmailing by the HCA top brass over free tickets have led the franchise to rethink playing at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

Background of the Conflict

The conflict surfaced when SRH’s general manager, Srinath TB, sent an email to HCA treasurer CJ Srinivas Rao, expressing the franchise’s discontent over alleged harassment. The core issue revolves around the demand for additional complimentary tickets and a locked box incident during the match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

SRH’s Frustration with HCA

The Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA), which usually receives 50 complimentary tickets, allegedly demanded 20 extra tickets beyond their allotted quota. During the match against LSG, HCA representatives reportedly locked a box and refused to open it until their additional ticket demands were met. The franchise has also claimed that such issues have persisted since last season, creating an increasingly strained and hostile relationship with HCA.

“All these unprofessional threats and actions by HCA, especially by the HCA president, make it evident that you don’t want Sunrisers to play at your stadium. If that is the case, please let me know in writing so that we can inform BCCI, the Telangana govt, and our management that you wish for us to move to another venue, and we will move. We have been working with HCA for the last 12 years. Only from last season have we been facing constant issues and harassment from HCA,” Srinath stated in the e-mail, as per Times of India.

Srinath TB’s Strongly Worded Email

The email from SRH’s general manager clearly states that the franchise will not tolerate such unprofessional behavior. SRH pays appropriate rent for the stadium and has jurisdiction over it during the IPL season. The mail highlights instances of intimidation and coercion by the HCA president and other officials. SRH has requested a meeting with HCA’s apex council members to resolve the ongoing conflict.

“For several years, HCA has been allocated 50 complimentary tickets (F12A box) as a part of the 3,900 complimentary tickets. However, this year, you are claiming the capacity of the box to be only 30 and asking for an additional 20 complimentary tickets in a different box. When this was brought to our notice, we informed you that we shall discuss and come to a mutually amicable solution,” he wrote in the mail.

“Given the constant threats, coercion and blackmailing by HCA, we suggest that we go as per the signed agreement between us, as per which we will allocate 10 per cent of complimentary tickets across each stand. In light of these developments, we formally request a meeting with the apex council members at the earliest convenience to discuss and resolve this matter,” the mail added.

Possible Relocation Options for SRH

If SRH decides to move out of Hyderabad, potential alternate venues could include: Relocating from Hyderabad to venues like Vizag, Pune, Lucknow, or Raipur could have a substantial impact on SunRisers Hyderabad’s loyal fanbase. The move may lead to the loss of home advantage, potentially affecting team morale. A new venue might struggle to attract the same level of support as Hyderabad, resulting in reduced spectator turnout. Additionally, die-hard SRH supporters could feel disappointed and express backlash over the decision.

BCCI and Telangana Government’s Role

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Telangana government may intervene to address the issue. As the governing body, BCCI holds the authority to resolve conflicts between franchises and state associations, while the Telangana government could step in to ensure fair play, given the allegations of coercion involved.
