Ahead of the upcoming T20I series against South Africa, India’s skipper Suryakumar Yadav emphasized how the return of all-rounder Hardik Pandya adds vital balance and calm to the team’s mix. Having recovered from a quadriceps injury suffered during the recent Asia Cup, Pandya is back in the T20 squad and offers more than just depth — his seam-bowling ability combined with all-round experience fills a valuable void.

With over 120 T20 internationals already under his belt, he has proven mettle under pressure. His return, along with his strong form for Baroda in the recent Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and his energetic start at India’s net session in Barabati Stadium, all reinforced the belief that his comeback comes at just the right time.

Experience That “Counts for a Lot”

Suryakumar was clear about what Hardik brings to the table: a wealth of experience and multiple tactical options. “When he opened the bowling with the new ball, he opened up a lot of options and combinations for us with respect to the playing eleven,” he said. The captain added, “So that’s what he brings to the table … his experience is invaluable.

He has done well in a lot of good games, big games and ICC and ACC events also. So that experience counts for a lot and his presence will definitely give a good balance to the side.” Indeed, in big-match scenarios — especially those involving ICC or continental tournaments — such composure and versatility can prove decisive. For a unit aiming to peak at the next T20 World Cup, having a seasoned player like Pandya could be an essential stabilizing factor.

Shubman Gill’s Return and Batting Flexibility

Along with Pandya, vice-captain Shubman Gill has returned from a neck injury sustained during a Test in Kolkata. According to Suryakumar, both players “look healthy and fit” as they rejoin the squad. Gill is expected to partner the in-form Abhishek Sharma at the top of the order, which adds shine to India’s batting approach ahead of the multi-format challenges ahead.

The skipper also touched on the shifting roles for Sanju Samson — previously used as opener — indicating that now, other batters need to exhibit flexibility. “Any player who’s ready and flexible to bat anywhere from three to six,” Suryakumar said, “is good to see.”

He noted that such flexibility across positions is a strength, highlighting how having multiple players capable of opening or batting down the order — depending on team needs — gives India a “good asset … and a good headache to have.” With this balance and adaptability, Suryakumar sounded optimistic: the squad “looks good. It looks strong,” and he believes the team is ready for what’s ahead.
