India captain Suryakumar Yadav made a frank admission after India’s defeat in the fourth T20I against New Zealand, revealing that the team deliberately chose to experiment rather than play safe. With the series already sealed, the Indian management decided to push boundaries by altering the team balance, fielding six specialist batters and five bowlers.

According to Suryakumar, the move was intentional and aimed at testing the squad’s adaptability in unfamiliar situations. He explained that the idea was to “challenge ourselves” and explore how the team would respond under pressure, especially while chasing big totals.

‘Wanted To Challenge Ourselves’: SKY Explains the Thinking

Reflecting on the loss, Suryakumar openly stated, “We wanted to challenge ourselves,” underlining that the result was secondary to the learnings gained. He pointed out that modern T20 cricket often demands teams to chase targets in excess of 180 or even 200, sometimes after losing early wickets.

The fourth T20I presented an opportunity to simulate such scenarios in a real match environment. The Indian skipper also noted that experimenting with combinations was essential, particularly with an eye on the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup. Giving game time to players in the World Cup squad, he felt, was far more valuable than sticking rigidly to a winning formula.

Lessons Learned Despite the Defeat

Although the strategy did not yield the desired outcome — India were bowled out for a modest total and suffered a heavy defeat — Suryakumar maintained that the experience would prove beneficial in the long run. He acknowledged that the plan did not work on the day but stressed that failures often provide deeper insights than comfortable wins. The captain also hinted that similar experiments could be repeated in the future if conditions allow, saying the team might even consider choosing to chase again in such matches.

For Suryakumar and the team management, the loss was not a setback but a reminder that preparation for global tournaments requires courage, experimentation, and the willingness to accept short-term failures for long-term success.
