Team India batter Suryakumar Yadav has emerged as one of the prolific batters in the shortest format of the game. He is currently the highest-ranked T20I batter among Indians and is also the highest run-scorer in the shortest format this year.

Meanwhile, Yadav struggled to make it to the Indian team despite scoring tons of runs in the IPL. He became frustrated while waiting for the call-up that never came. That is when he made the decision to change some parts of his strategy in an attempt to turn around the situation.

“I started training in a different way. After 2018 I realized what I need to work on in my game. I started batting more towards the off side. I started dieting. Did a few things that really helped me in the 2018 domestic season and in 2019. And going forward, in 2020, my body was completely different.” Suryakumar said in a chat with ESPNCricinfo’s Cricket Monthly.

“It took me about a year and a half to realize what my body was used to” – Suryakumar Yadav

At first, Suryakumar Yadav felt as though he was practising aimlessly and was becoming frustrated, but after switching to “quality” training, he became more consistent.

“It took time. It took me about a year and a half to realize what my body was used to — what would help me, how could I move on. Eventually we both realized, yes, we are headed in the right direction. Then everything was on autopilot. I knew what I had to do, how I had to train, how much I had to practice,” he said.

“Earlier I was just practising, practising, sometimes getting a little frustrated. And I felt that there was no merit in that – there was a lot of volume. But after 2018 my training, diet, net sessions There was a lot of quality. And all in all, that helped me really well,” Suryakumar added.

When smart work rather than hard work was required in the 2017–2018 season, Suryakumar Yadav remembered the chat he had with his wife Devisha. He added that the discussion focused on experimenting in practice and improving the off-side game.

He also said that the diet had made him appear much more physically fit in the domestic seasons of 2019 and 2020, which in a sense led to his first national call-up in 2021.
