Team India led by Ajinkya Rahane will look to avoid an unwanted history as they take the field in the Boxing-Day test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday. India are yet to win a test match this year. They lost two test matches against New Zealand to start the year and have lost the first test in Adelaide. Another defeat in MCG will see them end the year without winning or even drawing a test match.

Team India Have Zero Test Wins This Year

In its 88-year long cricketing history, there has not been a single year where the Indian cricket team has either not won or draw a test match. However, the Boxing-Day test match in Melbourne presents a challenging situation for Team India.

India’s Tour to Australia was their first cricketing assignment since the COVID-19 pandemic. India lost the ODI series 2-1. They came back to win the T20I series 2-1. Now they have started the Test series with a loss as well. They lost the first test in Adelaide against Australia. They were bowled out for their lowest Test score as India saw a batting collapse in the second innings.

A number of other teams in the past have failed to win even a single Test match in a particular year. Bangladesh have not won a test match in a year as many as five times. Australia, South Africa and Zimbabwe have done this thrice. Teams like England, New Zealand, West Indies and Sri Lanka have all had performances where they had failed to win or draw a single game in a calendar year in Tests.

Meanwhile, BCCI announced the playing XI for Team India in the second test earlier today. Shubman Gill and Mohammad Siraj will be making their Test debut in Adelaide. Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja also make a comeback into the team. Prithvi Shaw and Wriddhiman Saha have been dropped after their bad performance in the first test.
