When the Indian team for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 was announced, the notable absence of star opener Shubman Gill from the main squad caused quite a stir. Although Gill was included among the reserve players, recent reports indicate that he will return to India after the final group-stage match against Canada.
Shubman Gill, a prominent figure in the cricket world, became the centre of attention when he wasn’t selected for the main squad of the T20 World Cup 2024. He did travel to the USA with Team India, but he was noticeably absent from the stadium, where captain Rohit Sharma and other team members were seen supporting the matches.
In contrast, other reserve players like Rinku Singh, Avesh Khan, and Khaleel Ahmed were visibly cheering for the team during the India-Pakistan match in New York.
Reports have surfaced suggesting that both Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan will return to India after the group stage. They were initially kept in the squad to provide immediate replacements in case of injuries. However, insider sources hint that the real reason for Gill’s return is due to disciplinary issues. Gill was not seen with the team in the USA and was reportedly spending time away from the squad, possibly engaged in his side business.
Shubman unfollowed Rohit on Instagram
Adding another twist to the situation, it has been noted that Shubman Gill unfollowed Indian captain Rohit Sharma on Instagram. This action suggests potential friction between Gill and the team. Despite performing well for India in the previous ODI World Cup, Gill did not make it into the main squad for this T20 World Cup and was only included as a reserve player.
His Instagram move has fueled speculation about the state of his relationship with the team. The international career of the 24-year-old Shubman Gill includes 25 Test matches, 44 ODIs, and 14 T20Is for India. He has scored 1,492 runs in Test matches, 2,271 runs in ODIs, and 335 runs in T20Is.
