‘The Crowd Was Something Special’- Alex Carey Savours Maiden Ashes Ton At Home

Alex Carey produced a memorable performance at the Adelaide Oval, playing a match-defining role in Australia’s Ashes victory. Walking in with Australia under pressure at 94/4, Carey showed patience and maturity to weather a challenging phase against England’s attack. He steadied the innings before shifting gears, compiling a well-paced 106 off 143 balls that helped Australia wrest control of the contest. His partnership with Usman Khawaja proved crucial in rebuilding the innings and setting a strong platform.

Reflecting on the intensity of the occasion, Carey said, “We knew what was on the line coming into this match, and I thought the boys stayed really present and played what was in front of us. We know England is such a good cricket team and that we were going to be challenged.” He also underlined how demanding the contest remained until the final moments, adding, “Again, right to the end today, it was a real grind. For the boys to all chip in throughout the series so far has been a lot of fun.”

Special Crowd And Praise For Teammates

Alex Carey highlighted the role of the Adelaide supporters in creating a memorable atmosphere throughout the Test, saying, “And this Adelaide crowd throughout the last five days has just been something special.” The wicketkeeper-batter also lauded Travis Head for his extraordinary record at the venue, stating, “Travis, again, something special here – four Test hundreds at the same venue. I know how good he is, and he is showing the world he’s one of the best players.”

Scoring his maiden Ashes century in front of family and friends made the moment even more meaningful for Carey. Speaking about the emotional significance, he said, “To have family and friends, to be able to contribute to Australia’s victories, is always something I am trying to do. To do it here (score his maiden Ashes century) in Adelaide this week was pretty amazing.”

Familiar Conditions And Bowling Strength

Carey credited his comfort at Adelaide to his regular domestic outings, explaining, “I am lucky to play a lot of Sheffield Shield cricket here; it is a familiar surface.” He also praised Khawaja’s late inclusion and composure at the crease, saying, “To be able to put on a partnership with Usman Khawaja, who came back into the group and played really well at late notice, it was fantastic again, not surprising from such a great player.”

On his wicketkeeping role, Carey spoke about the benefits of playing alongside elite bowlers and expressed concern for spinner Nathan Lyon following his injury, concluding, “Fingers crossed he is okay, he was really, really special yesterday late in the day. It has been a lot of fun, and this bowling attack is really, really good.”
