In a remarkable display of skill and determination, Southern Brave’s Smriti Mandhana etched her name in the history books by setting a new record for the most 50-plus scores in the Women’s Hundred.
The explosive batter achieved this feat during an intense clash against Welsh Fire. Mandhana’s knock, however, was overshadowed by the unfortunate result, as the Brave suffered a heart-wrenching loss by a mere four runs.
Mandhana’s innings were nothing short of spectacular, showcasing her prowess with the bat. Despite her valiant efforts, she fell short of securing victory for her team.
In a nail-biting finale, with the Brave needing five runs off the last ball, Mandhana was unable to find the boundary off the delivery bowled by Hayley Matthews, leaving the crowd at the edge of their seats.
On the other side, it was Matthews who stole the spotlight with an exceptional performance.
Her blistering knock of 65 runs from just 38 balls, adorned with 13 powerful fours, propelled Welsh Fire to a formidable total.
The Fire’s innings resulted in the second-highest score ever recorded in the history of the Women’s Hundred.
Matthews’ contributions weren’t limited to her batting prowess; she also played a pivotal role with the ball, crucially dismissing Chloe Tryon, earning her the well-deserved Player of the Match award.
Mandhana’s consistent form throughout the tournament has been a significant driving force for the Brave.
She has been a standout performer, not only with the bat but also with her bowling contributions. Currently leading the charts as the top wicket-taker, Mandhana has amassed an impressive 125 runs in just two games, maintaining an outstanding average of 125 and a striking strike-rate of 160.25.
Despite the setback in this closely contested encounter, Southern Brave, under the leadership of Anya Shrubsole, remains a strong contender in the Women’s Hundred.
Their commendable performance has earned them a respectable third position in the league standings, with two points to their name and a net run rate of 0.575.
With one victory out of two matches, the Brave’s journey in the tournament continues as they aim to build on their successes and leave an indelible mark in the Women’s Hundred.
