The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 Moves To The UAE, ICC Confirms

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 will no longer be played in Bangladesh but instead take place within the boundaries of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). On Tuesday morning, August 20th, it was directly confirmed by ICC that the place where this prestigious women’s tournament would take place had been altered.

In Dubai and Sharjah (two venues situated in UAE), there will be hosting the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup from October 3rd – October 18th. ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice expressed:

“It is a shame not to be hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh as we know the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would have staged a memorable event.”

Bangladesh will still retain the hosting rights for the T20 World Cup.

“I would like to thank the team at the BCB for exploring all avenues to try and enable the event to be hosted in Bangladesh, but travel advisories from the governments of a number of the participating teams meant that wasn’t feasible,” Allardice explained.

“I’d also like to thank the Emirates Cricket Board for stepping in to host on behalf of the BCB and Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe for their generous offers of support, and we look forward to seeing ICC global events in both of those countries in 2026,” he went on to add in the official statement.

Concerns about Bangladesh hosting the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup increased due to the ongoing civil unrest in the country.

ICC Chair Barclay will resign in November

The day of 2023 is when Greg Barclay told the board that he would resign from the role of ICC Chairperson after serving for a period that ends in November. In November 2020, Barclay was named as the Independent ICC Chair and later on, went unopposed in 2022 to be re-elected again.

The current directors must submit nominations for a new Chair by 27 August 2024. If there are more than two candidates, an election will be held and the new Chair will take office from 1 December 2024.
