“Thought I Would Never Come Back”- Sakariya Reflects On His Toughest Phase

Once regarded as one of India’s promising next-generation fast bowlers, Chetan Sakariya saw his career come to an abrupt halt due to a serious injury. After spending a long period away from competitive cricket, the left-arm pacer has finally made his return to domestic action, turning out for Saurashtra in the ongoing season for the first time since February 2024. Reflecting on the darkest phase of his journey, Sakariya admitted how uncertain his future once felt.

“When I got injured, I thought I would never come back. Now, I am feeling very good after playing in this domestic season, feel so good after bowling for Saurashtra,” he said after Saurashtra’s Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Andhra. An injury to his left wrist earlier in 2024 forced him into rehabilitation and kept him away from the game for months, testing him both physically and mentally.

Battling Mental And Emotional Setback

Sakariya revealed that the injury phase was among the toughest periods of his life, as doubts constantly surrounded his comeback. “It was very mentally challenging for me. I didn’t believe that I would be able to play cricket again. Some doctors told me that I might not be able to grip the ball again. It was a very difficult time for me as I was not able to believe in myself,” he recalled.

These struggles came after earlier personal tragedies in 2021, when he lost his father and younger brother in separate incidents. Those experiences, he said, shaped his ability to cope with adversity. “This situation that I faced in my life was unexpected… If I hadn’t been a cricketer, I don’t think I would have been able to come back to life,” he explained, adding that such hardships have prepared him for future challenges.

Support System, IPL Exposure And Fresh Goals

The 27-year-old credited his family, friends, and the Saurashtra Cricket Association for helping him rediscover confidence during rehabilitation. “Gradually, my family and friends supported me… believe in myself. So, I started working again,” he said, noting how local tournaments helped him regain match sharpness. A major boost came when Kolkata Knight Riders signed him as a replacement during IPL 2025.

“I think it was the biggest thing for me in 2025,” Sakariya said, praising the trust shown by the KKR management and the guidance of Bharat Arun. While acknowledging that he still has technical improvements to make, Sakariya remains focused on achievable targets. “But right now, I have set small goals… then I want to play in the IPL. It has always been like that. I have set small goals in my life,” he concluded, signalling a patient and determined approach to rebuilding his career.
