Tilak Varma Shatters Records With Explosive Performance In SMAT

India’s preparations for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 have been disrupted by a significant injury concern involving one of their most promising middle-order batters, Tilak Varma.

The 23-year-old suffered an abdominal issue that necessitated surgery, ruling him out of the first three Twenty20 Internationals against New Zealand — the final series before the start of the T20 World Cup on February 7.

With Varma’s recovery on progress but a return timeline still uncertain, his availability for India’s title defence now hangs in doubt, forcing the selectors and team management to consider contingency options should he be unable to take part in the global tournament.

Varma’s absence is felt sharply because he occupies a key spot in India’s middle order, often batting at No. 3 or No. 4 — positions crucial to stabilizing and accelerating the innings in T20 cricket.

His performances in recent high-pressure matches, such as the Asia Cup final, showcased his ability to build innings while also scoring quickly, making him a vital piece of the batting puzzle.

Therefore, replacing him isn’t simply about filling a slot; it requires identifying a batter who can deliver consistent middle-order runs and occasionally contribute with additional skills like part-time bowling.

Why Chopra Rejects Gill and Jaiswal as Replacement Picks

Former India batter and respected cricket analyst Aakash Chopra weighed in on the debate about Varma’s possible stand-in, emphasizing that conventional opening batters should not be considered for the role. Specifically, Chopra ruled out both Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal — two prolific openers — as viable options, noting that their inclusion would create a surplus of opening talent but not address the middle-order gap left by Varma.

Since India already boasts depth at the top of the order, reshuffling it to replace a middle-order position would disrupt the team balance at a critical juncture.

Chopra argued that the replacement must be someone who naturally slots into the middle order and brings experience in navigating the challenges typical of those positions. That way, India can maintain the equilibrium between aggressive starts and consolidating roles without overloading their opening lineup with players less suited for middle-order demands.

Chopra’s Preferred Replacements: Iyer, Parag and Others

After dismissing Gill and Jaiswal for this specific role, Chopra put his primary backing behind Shreyas Iyer, a seasoned middle-order batter with a strong track record in both international cricket and domestic competitions. Iyer’s experience and recent form make him a logical choice, especially given his familiarity with batting under pressure and his ability to anchor or accelerate the innings as required.

As a secondary option, Chopra suggested Riyan Parag, valuing his potential as a batting all-rounder who adds bowling capability — a bonus in the T20 format.

In a more speculative rank, he also mentioned Jitesh Sharma, though he acknowledged the complications of having three wicketkeepers in the squad if Sharma were selected. Ultimately, among all discussed options, Iyer remains Chopra’s top choice due to his balance of experience, skill, and suitability to the middle-order role India would be looking to fill.
