Tim David Injury Rocks Australia’s T20 World Cup Preparations

With the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 drawing closer, teams have entered the final stretch of their preparations for the tournament, which begins in India on February 7. India have already named their shortlisted players, while other nations are fine-tuning their combinations.

Amid this crucial phase, Australia have suffered a significant setback with explosive batter Tim David picking up a hamstring strain. Known for his power-hitting in the shortest format, David has amassed 1,596 runs in 68 T20 internationals at an impressive strike rate of 168.88. Unfortunately for Australia, scans have confirmed a Grade 2 strain, ruling him out of the remainder of the ongoing Big Bash League.

BBL Injury Raises Temporary Concerns

David sustained the injury while attempting a quick run during Hobart Hurricanes’ four-wicket victory over Perth Scorchers on Friday. Medical assessments later confirmed the extent of the issue, forcing the Hurricanes to shut him down for the rest of the tournament.

In an official statement released on December 29, the franchise said, “Tim David sustained a grade two right hamstring strain during his recent BBL match. As a result, David has been ruled out for the remainder of the BBL. David’s rehabilitation timeline has him tracking to be available for selection for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.” While his absence from the BBL is a blow, the reassurance around his World Cup availability offers some relief to Australian fans.

Cummins And Hazlewood Updates Offer Mixed Signals

Australia are also managing fitness concerns surrounding their experienced pace attack. Despite ongoing injury issues, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood are expected to feature in the provisional World Cup squad. Head coach Andrew McDonald confirmed that Cummins will undergo another scan on his back in four weeks, after which a final decision will be taken.

“Pat will have a scan, I think in another four weeks, so that’ll give us the information then on where he’s at for the World Cup. He’ll be named in the squad of 15, and then we’ll get that information as to where he’s at,” McDonald said.

Cummins has played only one international match since suffering a lumbar stress injury in July. He made a determined comeback during the third Test in Adelaide, claiming six wickets in an 82-run victory that helped Australia retain the Ashes urn, before withdrawing from the remainder of the series as a precaution.

Meanwhile, Hazlewood, who missed the entire Ashes due to hamstring and Achilles issues, appears on track for a return. After impressing against India in white-ball cricket earlier, his recovery is progressing well. “Josh is returning to bowl. He looks as though he should be right in terms of possible timeframes,” McDonald noted, providing a timely boost to Australia’s World Cup hopes.
