Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan shared a light-hearted story about a conversation he had with ex-wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik during the 2018 Test series in England. Dhawan endured a tough run, scoring only 162 runs in eight innings at an average of 20.25, while Karthik also struggled, managing just 21 runs in two matches.
Reflecting on their disappointing performances, Dhawan recalled jokingly telling Karthik that their Test careers were over and even quipped that he should donate his white pads.
“I was in the lift once, there was Dinesh Karthik as well. He was also there in the England series. I told him funnily that both our careers are done. I told him to donate his white pads to someone. This was the conversation. He was also laughing. I told him to pack his white pads,” he said on Raj Shamani’s podcast. (47:36)
Interestingly, the 2018 England tour proved to be the final Test series for both Shikhar Dhawan and Dinesh Karthik. Following that series, neither of them returned to India’s Test squad. Karthik ended his red-ball career with 26 matches, scoring 1025 runs at an average of 25, including one century and seven fifties.
Dhawan, on the other hand, finished with 34 Tests, amassing 2315 runs at an average of 40.61, with seven hundreds and five half-centuries.

During the podcast, Shikhar Dhawan also recounted a humorous incident from the 2018 England tour that involved then-skipper Virat Kohli. The left-hander revealed how he had playfully teased the team’s physio, though he chose not to disclose the physio’s name.
“I will not name the physio. We had won a trophy, Virat and I were standing. The physio told he had put some hair growth oil. I told him I don’t know about hair but I think you have put it on your eyebrows as they look so big. Virat and I laughed a lot that we fell out of the lift. The moment was such,” he said. (48:56)
