When Travis Head, an elite batter known for dismantling bowlers with ease, declared Jasprit Bumrah as the toughest bowler he has ever faced, the cricketing world took notice. In a rapid-fire interview with News18 CricketNext, the Aussie star openly admitted that India’s pace spearhead has challenged him like no other.
Travis Head: The Menace Against India
Head’s record against India has been the stuff of nightmares for Indian fans. Whether it was the 2023 ODI World Cup final in Ahmedabad or the 2021-23 World Test Championship final in London, he’s been the guy who steps up in the biggest moments against the Men in Blue.
Jasprit Bumrah, on the other hand, needs no introduction. A slingy action, laser-like yorkers, and the rare ability to swing the ball at pace he’s a bowler built for chaos. No matter the format, no matter the pitch, Bumrah is always a threat.
The Face-offs: Head vs Bumrah
Between 2019 and 2025, Bumrah has dismissed Travis Head six times in nine Tests, holding him to a batting average of just 22.2. That’s a significant dent in Head’s otherwise fearsome Test record. In four ODIs, Bumrah has managed to get Head out once. But even then, he’s kept the left-hander quieter than most can, with a decent average of 39.0. T20Is have seen one wicket for Bumrah in two games against Head. In IPL, Head has never been dismissed by Bumrah.
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25
Travis Head ended up as the top run-scorer in the blockbuster Border-Gavaskar Trophy with 448 runs. Every innings felt like a counter-punch to India’s plans. Bumrah was a constant thorn in Australia’s side, bagging 32 wickets, making him the highest wicket-taker.

Head on the Emotional Intensity
Head described the entire series as “emotionally draining” and you could see why. The constant media buzz, dramatic narratives, and on-field battles made every Test feel like a final.
“Yeah, I was tired by the end of it. It was emotionally draining as much physically. I feel like the media played the biggest role it’s played in the series to date. Everything was a storyline…” he told News18 CricketNext.
Head further said, “You go to Perth, and all of a sudden, we were the worst team ever. We played well in Adelaide and all of a sudden, where does that leave India? Where does that leave all their gun players? Do they need change? They just won a Test, and then we go to Melbourne. Every game had a storyline. It was never just one player, someone played well or this team played well this game and we move on. It was: first Test, Virat’s back and gets a hundred. The next Test, he misses out. It was like, where’s he at? It was just the emotion of it all—for everyone—was hard, bar probably Jasprit, who had the series of his life.”
For Head to admit Bumrah’s superiority speaks volumes about the mutual respect in elite cricket. It’s not just a battle of skills it’s a battle of minds, and Head’s recognition is a tip of the hat to Bumrah’s genius.
